Run a column only on the rows that need it

After this lesson you can add an Only run if rule so a Use AI, HTTP API or formula column runs only on the rows that pass it.

Narration: preview voiceA private equity team writes openers only for companies scoring 7 or more. The companies are example data.

The short answer

Open the column's Run settings and find Only run if. Describe the rule in plain words with Generate with AI, such as run only when Fit score is 7 or more, check the sample outputs and press Save formula. Or write it yourself, typing / to insert columns. Rows that don't pass show Only run if not satisfied and cost nothing.

Step by step

  1. 1Find the fieldIn the column's Run settings (Use AI, HTTP API or a formula column), find Only run if. Blank means every row runs.
  2. 2Generate the ruleClick Generate with AI, describe when the column should run, press Generate formula and read the Sample outputs. Press Save formula.
  3. 3Or write itType the rule yourself; / inserts a column. Example: !{{Company Domain}} runs only when that field is empty.
  4. 4RunRows that fail the rule show Only run if not satisfied and cost nothing.

Try it in Duckrow

About five minutes, in your own workspace.

  1. Open a Use AI column's Run settings.
  2. Generate a rule such as run only when a score is 7 or more.
  3. Run 10 rows and count the skipped ones.

You're done when only rows that pass your rule were processed.

Check what stuck

Three quick questions. Nothing is saved.

  1. 1. A row fails the Only run if rule. What does it cost?

  2. 2. Which column uses Only if Jev says yes instead of Only run if?

  3. 3. What does Generate with AI cost here?

Transcript

0:00Only the rows that matter

Why write an opener for a company you'll never buy? Run the column only on the rows that pass a rule.

0:08Describe the rule

In the Use AI panel, under run settings, find only run if. Click generate with AI, and describe it: run only when fit score is seven or more. Duckrow writes the formula and checks it on sample rows. Save formula. Writing the rule is free.

0:27Skipped rows cost nothing

Now run the column. Rows scoring seven or more are processed. The rest say only run if not satisfied, and cost nothing.

0:37Write it yourself

You can also type a rule yourself, using a slash to insert columns. Only run if works on Use AI, HTTP API and formula columns. For finds, use only if Jev says yes.

0:52Recap

To recap. Only run if picks the rows a column runs on. Describe the rule, and generate with AI writes the formula, free. Rows that fail it are skipped, at no cost. Next, bring any data with the HTTP API column.
